Tessera ("we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially the teens and families who rely on our app. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect (and do not collect), how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
1. Our Core Commitment
We do not collect personal information about teens. Tessera is designed with privacy at its foundation. All student profile data -- including personality assessments, conversation history, and career exploration results -- is stored locally on the user's device and is never transmitted to or stored on our servers.
We never share any information with third parties. No user data -- whether from students or parents -- is sold, rented, licensed, or otherwise disclosed to any third party for any purpose, including advertising, analytics, or marketing.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Student Data
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information from students. All data generated through the app -- including name, age, grade, interests, personality profile, conversation history, and career results -- remains exclusively on the student's device.
2.2 Parent Data
The only personal information we may collect from parents is an email address, provided voluntarily for the following limited purposes:
- Account recovery or support requests
- Product updates and launch announcements (with explicit opt-in)
Parent email addresses are never shared with third parties and may be deleted at any time upon request.
2.3 Usage Data
We do not use third-party analytics services. We do not track individual user behavior, create user profiles on our servers, or use cookies for tracking purposes.
3. AI Conversations
Tessera uses AI (provided by Anthropic's Claude) to generate conversational questions and process responses. When a conversation occurs:
- Only the minimum context needed for the current question is sent to the AI provider (typically the current question area and recent conversation history).
- No student names, identifying information, or full profiles are included in AI requests.
- AI conversation data is processed in real time and is not stored by the AI provider beyond the duration of the API request.
- We do not use student conversation data to train AI models.
4. Data Storage and Security
All student data is stored locally on the device using an encrypted embedded database. This means:
- Your data never leaves your device (except for the minimal AI conversation context described above).
- If you uninstall the app, all local data is permanently deleted.
- We cannot access, recover, or view your data because we never have it.
5. Children's Privacy
Tessera is designed for users aged 14 and older. Users under 14 are not permitted to use the app and are blocked during the onboarding process. Because we do not collect personal information from our users, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) obligations regarding data collection do not apply. Nevertheless, we take the safety and privacy of young users seriously and have designed the app accordingly.
6. Third-Party Services
Tessera uses the following third-party service for core functionality:
- Anthropic (Claude AI): Provides the conversational AI engine. Anthropic's API processes conversation requests in real time without retaining user data. See Anthropic's Privacy Policy for details on their data practices.
We do not use any other third-party services for analytics, advertising, social media integration, or tracking.
7. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: All your data is on your device and accessible through the app at any time.
- Deletion: Uninstalling the app deletes all local data. If you have provided a parent email, you may request its deletion by contacting us.
- Portability: We plan to offer data export features in a future release.
- Opt out: If you opted in to email communications, you may unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email or by contacting us.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify users through the app or via email (if provided). The "Effective Date" at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised.
